Description

Wiccans, pagans and witches of all eras and traditions use symbols for rituals, spells, ceremonies and everyday life. There are many symbols with many different meanings.

Each symbol has a basic meaning, yet represents different feelings and actions for different people.

Meaning of the six symbols

The five-pointed star inside a circle is the most common pagan symbol and is generally used to identify oneself as pagan or Wiccan. The five points represent the four elements plus spirit, and the circle connects them. A five-pointed star without a circle is sometimes called a pentagram or pentacle. In numerology, the five points indicate that the pentacle symbolises Earth, so it can represent this element on an altar.

The Triple Moon represents the Goddess as Maiden, Mother and Crone through the waxing, full and waning moon. It is also associated with feminine energy, mystery and psychic abilities. The symbol often appears on crowns or other headdresses favoured by High Priestesses.

The traditional meaning of the Ankh is “eternal life”. This hieroglyph appears in countless ancient Egyptian carvings, usually held by gods and pharaohs to show their dominion over life and their immortality. In these images, it is held by the loop rather than the base. The ankh is popular among pagans, perhaps because its similarity to a Christian cross makes it less startling to others than a pentacle.

There are many variations of the basic Triskele, or triple spiral. The version shown here is simple, illustrating its basic form. This Celtic symbol represents the power of life and rebirth. It combines the spiral, often illustrating life's cycle, with the sacred number three, also seen in the Triple Goddess's phases. It is also called the Triskelion.

The Horned God symbol, sun and moon, often represents the God's masculine energy in Wicca. It is an archetypal symbol associated with Cernussos, Herne and other gods of vegetation and fertility. In some feminist Wiccan traditions, such as Dianic Wicca, it instead represents July's “Horn Moon”, also called the Blessing Moon, and is linked with lunar goddesses.

In spirituality, the Spiral can represent the path from outward consciousness — materialism, external awareness, ego and outward perception — towards the deeper soul, enlightenment, invisible essence, nirvana and cosmic awareness.

Movement between the inner world of intuition and the immaterial and the outer world of matter and manifestation is mapped by the archetypal spiral, marking human evolution on both individual and collective levels.

In terms of rebirth or growth, the spiral can also represent awareness of nature beginning at the core and expanding outwards. This is the meaning of all things, as recognised by most mystics.

To gain a wider understanding of the spiral's meaning, contemplate its appearance in nature.

The Horned God is often overlooked in Wicca because people assume it is exclusively a religion of goddesses. Although this is true in some cases, such as Dianic Wicca, one of Wicca's main principles is balance in all things — light and dark, love and hate, negative and positive, chalice and sword, Goddess and God.
